In 1990, during an interview with George Plimpton for The Paris Review, Maya Angelou revealed the few items she brought into Spartan hotel rooms in which she wrote her seminal works: the Bible, a dictionary, Roget’s Thesaurus, yellow notepads, an ashtray and a bottle of sherry.

And it’s just about all anyone, including Pastor Serenus Churn, Senior, can do to keep from drowning in sadness.

“Right now we’re busy making preparations and arrangements so I don’t think it will be real to us quite yet,” said Churn.

Courtney Singleton, a member of the custodial staff added, “It’s an honor to be able to help.”

The caretaker who called 911 to report of Maya Angelou’s passing told the operator she was hesitant to perform CPR because the author had been adamant that she did not want to be resuscitated in the event of her death.

The operator told the caretaker to perform CPR anyway, because Angelou was not in possession of a “Do Not Resuscitate” order.
