“Too bad I don’t never keep my word.” Ironically those are final words in the rap that Pastor Mason Betha, better known as Ma$e delivers on the R&B song, “Tricky Situation.” Turns out, it is a fitting phrase for the nature of the hypocrisy he is being accused of by members of his congregation.
The 36-year-old leader of El Elyon International Church has returned to his bad boy rapper roots to the chagrin of his loyal congregants—a lifestyle he, for a while, denounced after coming to know Jesus Christ.
According to gossip website TMZ, which first broke the story about Betha’s secret divorce filing (now dismissed) from his wife of 12 years, Twyla Betha, parishioners feel he is “a fake who has committed blasphemy by using the holiness of the church to advance his very unholy rap agenda.”
Members are reportedly so upset, they are considering withholding tithes to the ministry.
“They believe Mase is living a double life, spending as much time in the studio with hardcore rappers as in the church,” TMZ reports.
“They say his messages from the pulpit drip in hypocrisy, because what he raps about is exactly the opposite.”
In a recorded sermon, Betha once talked about why he believed God had called him away from the secular music industry.
